From Junin de los Andes to Chile

Lake Tromen is a place worth visiting. There you will find a spectacular landscape, dominated by the Lanin Volcano, with beautiful green water y refined volcanic sand. Besides, we have the possibility to do visits to Mapuche communities, camping, sleeping in a farm, fishing, or to keep going towards Chile. In this case, we have to take the Mamuil Malal International Crossing, which takes us to two of the most important touristic centers of the Chilean South: Pucon and Villarrica.

How is the journey? Attention, take note:

Going from Junin de los Andes, take Route 23 towards the North. Turn left when you get to Provincial Route 60 towards the International Crossing (West). Along this path you will find the accesses to two Mapuche communities: Atreico Community and Chuiquilihuin; the first one at 23 km and the second one at 40 approximately from Junin de los Andes. In these communities you will find traditional crafts made out of wool and wood, handmade by the Mapuches.

On both sides of Provincial Route 60 you will find farms with accommodation and two important inns, one of which is located on the shores of the River Malleo and the other one on the coast of Lake Tromen. These are musts for fishermen. Along this route, 45 km away from Junin de los Andes, you enter into the National Park Lanin, Tromen area, Turbio River Sectional. This park protects an important natural wood of Pehuenes (Araucarias Araucanas) and also the flora and fauna of Lake Tromen.

Lake Tromen has five arms: towards the North the Añihueraqui Bay, towards the East the Huaca-Mamuil Bay, in the South the Malleo Bay and in the West two arms that go to the Northwest. The landscape in this area is amazing and we recommend to do this route in a slow pace so as to take in as much as possible.

The lake empties towards the Southwest in the Malleo River. Its beaches are made out of volcanic sand and boulder, and its water is transparent and greenish with an intense waving.

However, the Lanin Volcano dominates the scenery and will take you through an unforgettable experience, as mountaineers will tell you.

In the center of the frontier you can do activities such as:

  • Camping in enabled areas
  • Trekking (to various sites, such as the Tromen terrace, the base of the volcano, or to the shelters)
  • Climbing the volcano (with the right equipment and authorization of the ranger of the section)
  • Sport fishing in Lake Tromen or Malleo River

Or you can just admire the spectacular scenery that the Lanin Volcan offers.

Internacional Crossing and Places in Chile

If you keep going on Route 60 you will get to the Mamuil Malal Internacional Crossing and, 40 km after the border, you can find the first touristic center in Chile; a town called Cararrehue (stone altar). This small town, with simple construction, is located on the shore of the Trancura River, surrounded by the Pulomo and Marillanca Hills, which are covered with native forests. 32 kilometers further on you will arrive to Pucon, the most important touristic center in the South of Chile, which is located next to the Villarrica volcano and in the shores of its lake.

There you will find many options and opportunities to enjoy: rivers, volcanoes, lakes, mountains, parks, beaches, thermae, sport fishing, horse riding, trekking, boating, rafting, sky and water sky, windsurf, a lot of great accommodation from where to choose and a luxurious casino in town.
