Chocolate: trademark of the city

Chocolate made in Bariloche is unlike any other chocolate.

Or who hasn’t heard talking about “Bariloche” chocolate in some part of the country? They are undoubtedly referring to this kind of homemade product, sold in grams and with a distinct flavor.

There must be few tourists who bid farewell to this city on the shore of Nahuel Huapi Lake, without taking with them at least one box of chocolate. Anyone planning to take a souvenir or a postcard from Bariloche, chooses chocolate.

But why did chocolate in our country became so typical of Bariloche? There are two factors that may explain it. First: the weather of the region, cold during most part of the year, suitable to enjoy chocolates’ calories. Second: the characteristics of the cultures that settled in Bariloche, which also were –and still are- an important factor. Central European origins left their mark. In fact, the first chocolate store was that of the Italian Aldo Fenoglio, who was followed by others of his same origin, bringing along the culinary customs of the Old Continent.

Chocolate is one of the many atractives of Bariloche

Throughout the years, the fame of “Bariloche” chocolate grew. Today the product feeds dozens of families in the city. The chocolate industry has even spread to other cities of the Patagonic mountain range.

In Bariloche, you will find sophisticated chocolate industries like Fenoglio or Del Turista, which sell from Easter chocolate eggs to fondue and all types of chocolate derivatives, and also export to different parts of the world; and you will also find small and picturesque stores “served by their own owners”.

Colorful shop windows and tempting aromas call the attention and constitute a delicious attraction for those wandering the streets of the city.

Once a year, people in the chocolate industry pay homage to the cocoa derivative, organizing the Chocolate Feast.
