Fascinating opportunity to walk over glacier ice. Suitable for everyone, as it does not require great efforts

Jetty at Bajo de la Sombra, over Provincial Road N º 11, 75 kilometers away from El Calafate. Tourist agencies that organize the bus round trip from El Calafate. The excursion leaves from the jetty at 10 a.m. and returns at 4 p.m. If you go by your own vehicle, you must make sure that you get on time. Take food. Also sneakers or walking boots.

From El Calafate (km 0), take Provincial Road N º 11. At kilometer 49, you will get to the entrance to the national park “Los Glaciares”. From there, you must continue for 22 km. until you get to the jetty called Bajo de la Sombra.

The excursion starts when you board a big pneumatic boat, in which you will cross the Brazo Rico from the Magallanes Peninsula to the opposite coast, where you will get off the boat to walk some hundred meters along the coast until the Southern margin of the Perito Moreno Glacier.

You can experience the glacier up close.

There, visitors must put on metal crampons under their shoes. They will be assisted by the guides. The trek over the glacier is the ideal moment to take pictures.

You will see very deep cracks of intense blue, through which water runs. You will learn how to walk on ice –crampons are essential – and you will enjoy an impressive view from the height.

It is recommended not to smoke in this place, in order to keep the purity of the landscape.
After the mini-trekking, you will return walking through the forest, where you will see several centuries old lenga and ñire trees with thick trunks. Near the jetty, there is a hut where you can eat before starting the return sail. When weather allows it, the boat sails very near the front of the Moreno glacier, so the visitor can get a real idea of its dimensions.
